This concise reference book helps readers understand and implement sound design not merely as a technical aspect of production, but as an opportunity for innovative audio design for video. It is grounded in findings from psychoacoustic research: How do people hear, and what role do their personal listening history and individual listening preferences play in this process?


Sound design for moving images is a domain of practitioners in which knowledge is primarily passed down orally. Consequently, there are very few studies in the literature addressing the question of why the audio channel is perceived by audiences as adequate to the visual channel and as effective in its immersive impact.
What fundamental considerations must be taken into account in auditory design? Why do we experience some audiovisual works as more immersive and more poerful in their effect than others?


In a listening test, 240 participants were each played a video through headphones in stereo in one of four versions (two different films, each combined with one of four audio types). The results of this study confirm the practical insight of many professional sound designers: that the sound track, in terms of its immersive effect, constitutes a distinct, highly specialized medium of communication.

When Music and Sound Effects Become Inseparable

How Sound Design Works is refreshing in the seriousness with which it treats sound effects. Maximilian Kock’s experiments produce some striking results. Music alone is not consistently the most effective means of increasing immersion or suspense, while sound effects can have a substantial influence on both. Perhaps most intriguing is the animated material, where music and sound effects independently reduced suspense, yet together produced a substantial increase in both suspense and immersion.

This seems particularly appropriate to animation, with its long history of interweaving music, sound effects and movement. Many sounds we perceive as effects have been created using musical instruments, while others were created with props selected or tuned for their musical qualities. The distinction between music and sound effect can therefore become much less important than how they work together.

Kock also finds that adding sound can sometimes reduce suspense by reducing ambiguity. That raises an interesting possibility: a soundtrack can narrow the potential for interpolation by supplying something the audience might otherwise construct for itself. Perhaps the more useful question, then, is not whether music or sound effects carry greater expressive power, but what happens when sound, image and story become inseparable.
